PhD Position in Evolutionary Genomics at Uppsala University
PhD Position in Evolutionary Genomics at Uppsala University

Uppsala University in Sweden is currently recruiting a doctoral researcher to join its Department of Ecology and Genetics for a fully funded PhD position in evolutionary genomics. The project focuses on two of the most compelling open questions in evolutionary biology — the origin and dynamics of sex chromosomes, and the mechanisms that shape sex ratios in natural populations. The position is full-time, starts on June 1, 2026, and is open to international applicants with a background in biology, population genetics, bioinformatics, or closely related fields.

About the PhD Project

The selected candidate will be embedded in the Program for Plant Ecology and Evolution within the Department of Ecology and Genetics (IEG), which is part of the internationally recognized Evolutionary Biology Centre (EBC). The PhD work will involve cutting-edge methods in population genomics, bioinformatics, and evolutionary modeling, supplemented by hands-on experimental work in growth chambers and molecular laboratories. Access to high-performance computing infrastructure through UPPMAX and close collaboration with SciLifeLab — Sweden’s national life science infrastructure — are key assets of the position. The doctoral student will also be enrolled in the Biology PhD School, which organizes symposia, courses, and scientific events for doctoral researchers across multiple departments.

Position Benefits and Compensation

This is a fully funded, full-time PhD position (100% employment) under a temporary contract in accordance with the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 5, § 7). Compensation follows Uppsala University’s individual salary-setting system, which in practice provides PhD students with a competitive monthly salary — a model common to all Swedish universities. Unlike many PhD programs internationally that operate on stipends, PhD positions in Sweden are formal employment contracts, meaning candidates are entitled to social security benefits, paid leave, occupational health coverage, and pension contributions from day one. The position is based in Uppsala, Sweden, with a start date of June 1, 2026, or later in summer or autumn 2026 by mutual agreement.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must hold a Master’s degree in biology with a specialization in evolutionary biology, population genetics, modeling, bioinformatics, or a related discipline. Alternatively, candidates must have completed at least 240 higher education credits, including a minimum of 60 credits at the Master’s level and an independent project of at least 15 credits, or possess equivalent knowledge acquired through other means. Beyond the formal degree requirement, shortlisted candidates must demonstrate proficiency in advanced population genomics, independent bioinformatic analysis of large-scale datasets, and practical molecular laboratory work. A strong and genuine interest in evolutionary biology is essential. Applicants must be able to work both collaboratively within a team and independently, and must communicate fluently in both spoken and written English. Highly valued additional qualifications include experience with population genomic modeling tools such as SLiM, genome assembly from long-read sequencing data, whole-genome resequencing, and prior work involving sex chromosomes, selfish genetic elements, or meiotic drive.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through Uppsala University’s official recruitment portal by April 30, 2026 (reference number: UFV-PA 2026/883). Notably, this recruitment does not require a traditional cover letter; instead, applicants are asked to respond to a set of structured questions directly in the application system — and those responses form a central part of the selection process. For questions about the position or the research project, prospective applicants can contact the supervising professor directly: Prof. Sophie Karrenberg at sophie.karrenberg@ebc.uu.se or by phone at +46 76 820 7578. The position may be subject to security vetting under Swedish law.
