The CERN Summer Student Program 2025, in Switzerland, is an exceptional opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in one of the world’s most prestigious research organizations. Program Structure
The CERN Summer Student Program spans 8 to 13 weeks during the European summer months, typically from June to September. Here’s what students can expect:
- Technical Projects: Participants contribute to real-world projects in experimental or engineering teams.
- Lecture Series: Experts from around the globe share insights into particle physics, engineering, and computing.
- Facility Tours and Workshops: Students explore CERN’s renowned facilities and engage in enriching discussions and workshops.
At the end of their stay, participants are required to submit a brief report summarizing their work and contributions during the program.
Advantages of the CERN Summer Student Program
CERN will provide accepted candidates with:
- A contract of association of 8 to 13 weeks to work on a technical project.
- An extensive physics lecture program (students will also be able to attend a series of IT lectures organized by Openlab).
- A 93 CHF per calendar day (net of tax) subsistence allowance to cover the cost of accommodation and meals in the Geneva area for a single person for the whole contract duration.
- A travel allowance on a lump sum basis paid to help you with the cost of travel between Geneva and your residence at the time of the selection committee (if applicable).
- Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive Health Insurance scheme (contribution already deducted from allowance).
- Assistance to find accommodation on the CERN site or nearby.
- Candidates coming from a CERN Non Member State country can stay for a duration of 8 weeks only. (Find here the list of CERN Member and Associate Member States).
- The few students who are paid directly from a national funding agency have to come to CERN with their insurance coverage.

Required documentation
You will need the following documents, in English or French, clearly labelled (e.g. “CV”, “Academic transcript”, “Reference letter”, etc.) and in PDF format to complete your application:
- A CV.
- A copy of your most recent official academic transcript (if you download it from your university portal please make sure there is no protection so that we can open it).
- At least one academic reference letter (dated less than 12 months), preferably two. Second reference letter can be from your previous internship.
Make sure you have all the documents requested to hand when you start your application on our career portal, as they cannot be added after its completion.
Possible starting contract dates
Every Monday from beginning to the end of June, namely 2 June, 9 June, 16 June, 23 June and 30 June 2025 (limited arrival places each Monday). Non-Member State students can arrive starting from 9 June 2025.
